As Imperceptibly As Grief : Emily Dickinson : : Summer Time Classic : :

As imperceptibly as Grief
The Summer lapsed away –
Too imperceptible at last
To seem like Perfidy –
A Quietness distilled
As Twilight long begun,
Or Nature spending with herself
Sequestered Afternoon –
The Dusk drew earlier in –
The Morning foreign shone –
A courteous, yet harrowing Grace,
As Guest, that would be gone –
And thus, without a Wing
Or service of a Keel
Our Summer made her light escape
Into the Beautiful. 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹 — Emily Dickinson : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : અર્થ નિર્દેશ આસ્વાદ કાવ્યાર્થ વિચાર સંકલન વિ જયરાજ : : Prof. Oliver Tearle, at Loughborough University writes : : ” This poem describes the passing of summer, which happens imperceptibly. Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer’s day? : William Shakespeare : Sonnet 18 : (1) : : Sonnet 18 : Paul Kelly : 2016 Album ( Seven Sonnets and A Song ) : (2) : : Summer Time Classic : :

Sonnet XVIII
Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer’s lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed,
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature’s changing course untrimmed:
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st,
Nor shall death brag thou wander’st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st,
So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee. 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹 — William Shakespeare : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : અર્થ નિર્દેશ આસ્વાદ કાવ્યાર્થ વિચાર સંકલન વિ જયરાજ : : Hammond :: The Reader and the Young Man Sonnets. Barnes & Noble. 1981. p. 27 writes :::: ” In the sonnet, the speaker asks whether he should compare the young man to a summer’s day, but notes that the young man has qualities that surpass a summer’s day. He also notes the qualities of a summer day are subject to change and will eventually diminish. The speaker then states that the young man will live forever in the lines of the poem, as long as it can be read. There is an irony being expressed in this sonnet: it is not the actual young man who will be eternalized, but the description of him contained in the poem, and the poem contains scant or no description of the young man, but instead contains vivid and lasting descriptions of a summer day, which the young man is supposed to outlive. ” :::: :::: :::: :::: :::: :::: :::: Poem Analysis : : Line by line : : Pending : : May 7 , 2022 :: : : Pune India : : : : : : : : : : : : : :

Loveliest of Trees, the Cherry Now : A. E. Housman : : Spring Time Classic : :

Loveliest of trees, the cherry now
Is hung with bloom along the bough,
And stands about the woodland ride
Wearing white for Eastertide.

Now, of my threescore years and ten,
Twenty will not come again,
And take from seventy springs a score,
It only leaves me fifty more.

And since to look at things in bloom
Fifty springs are little room,
About the woodlands I will go
To see the cherry hung with snow. 🌹🌹🌹 — A. E. Housman : : : : 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹. અર્થ નિર્દેશ આસ્વાદ કાવ્યાર્થ વિચાર સંકલન વિ જયરાજ : : A. E. The Trees : Philips Larkin : : Spring Time Classic : :

The Trees
The trees are coming into leaf
Like something almost being said;
The recent buds relax and spread,
Their greenness is a kind of grief.

Is it that they are born again
And we grow old? No, they die too,
Their yearly trick of looking new
Is written down in rings of grain.

Yet still the unresting castles thresh
In fullgrown thickness every May.
Last year is dead, they seem to say,
Begin afresh, afresh, afresh.🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹 —Philips Larkin વૃક્ષો’. The trees’ age is ‘written down in rings of grain’, after all. ચક્રાકાર વલયો ગણતા તેમાં પુરાણી તેની આયુ આશરે જાણી શકાય : : : : ” The Trees ” By Philips Larkin : : Spring Time Classic : : presented by V Jayaraj Pune India : : May 4 , 2022 ; : : : : : : :

Spring : Christina Rossetti : : Spring Time Classic : :

Spring

Frost-locked all the winter,
Seeds, and roots, and stones of fruits,
What shall make their sap ascend
That they may put forth shoots?
Tips of tender green,
Leaf, or blade, or sheath;
Telling of the hidden life
That breaks forth underneath,
Life nursed in its grave by Death.

Blows the thaw-wind pleasantly,
Drips the soaking rain,
By fits looks down the waking sun:
Young grass springs on the plain;
Young leaves clothe early hedgerow trees;
Seeds, and roots, and stones of fruits,
Swollen with sap put forth their shoots;
Curled-headed ferns sprout in the lane;
Birds sing and pair again.

There is no time like Spring,
When life’s alive in everything,
Before new nestlings sing,
Before cleft swallows speed their journey back
Along the trackless track –
God guides their wing,
He spreads their table that they nothing lack, –
Before the daisy grows a common flower
Before the sun has power
To scorch the world up in his noontide hour.

There is no time like Spring,
Like Spring that passes by;
There is no life like Spring-life born to die, –
Piercing the sod,
Clothing the uncouth clod,
Hatched in the nest,
Fledged on the windy bough,
Strong on the wing:
There is no time like Spring that passes by,
Now newly born, and now
Hastening to die. 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹 —- Christina Rossetti : : ; : ; : : : ( 1830 – 1934 ) : : Celebrates the new life that the spring brings, as all of the ‘hidden life’ beneath the earth ‘springs’ into action, bursting forth upon the scene : : : : : : : ; : : :: અર્થ નિર્દેશ આસ્વાદ કાવ્યાર્થ વિચાર સંકલન વિ જયરાજ : : In The Bleak Of Mid Winter is her another most famous poem .. . Christina Rossetti (1830-94) was one of the Victorian era’s greatest and most influential poets. She was the younger sister (by two years) of the Pre-Raphaelite artist and poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Christina Rossetti was born in London in 1830, and lived with her mother virtually all of her life. She never married. Many of her poems engage with the question of religious belief, such as ‘Good Friday’ (a poem about honest religious doubt as much as faith) and ‘Twice’, about the importance of Christian forgiveness and redemption (the poem is spoken by a fallen woman, a theme that can also be seen in ‘Goblin Market’).

Christina Rossetti composed her first poem while still a very young girl; she dictated it to her mother. It ran simply: ‘Cecilia never went to school / Without her gladiator.’ Goblin Market and Other Poems was the first collection of her poetry to be published, and it was the book that brought her to public attention. The title poem is a long narrative poem which is often taken for a children’s poem because of its fairy-tale motifs and imagery; Rossetti, however, always denied that the poem was intended for children. Several of the poems in the volume, such as ‘Remember’ and ‘When I am dead, my dearest’, were composed before she had turned twenty.

Rossetti’s influences were as diverse as the many poetic forms in which she wrote: sonnets, ballads, narrative poems, lyrics, even Christmas carols (‘In the Bleak Midwinter’ to name but the most famous). She was remarkably prolific: the Penguin edition of her Complete Poems runs to well over 1,000 pages and is a treasure-trove for the poetry-lover.

Rossetti died in 1894 and was buried in Highgate Cemetery where fellow Victorian writer George Eliot had earlier been laid to rest. She went on to influence a range of later poets, including Gerard Manley Hopkins, Ford Madox Ford, and Elizabeth Jennings. Philip Larkin was an admirer, praising her ‘steely stoicism’.

Spring : Gerard Manley Hopkins : : Spring Time Classic : :

Nothing is so beautiful as Spring –
When weeds, in wheels, shoot long and lovely and lush;
Thrush’s eggs look little low heavens, and thrush
Through the echoing timber does so rinse and wring
The ear, it strikes like lightnings to hear him sing;
The glassy peartree leaves and blooms, they brush
The descending blue; that blue is all in a rush
With richness; the racing lambs too have fair their fling. 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹 What is all this juice and all this joy?
A strain of the earth’s sweet being in the beginning
In Eden garden. – Have, get, before it cloy,
Before it cloud, Christ, lord, and sour with sinning,
Innocent mind and Mayday in girl and boy, Most O Maid’s child , thy choice and worthy the winning.

A Light Exists in Spring : Emily Dickinson : : Spring Time Classic : :

A Light exists in Spring
Not present on the Year
At any other period –
When March is scarcely here

A Color stands abroad
On Solitary Fields
That Science cannot overtake
But Human Nature feels.

It waits upon the Lawn,
It shows the furthest Tree
Upon the furthest Slope you know
It almost speaks to you.

Then as Horizons step
Or Noons report away
Without the Formula of sound
It passes and we stay –

A quality of loss

As Trade had suddenly encroached
Upon a Sacrament. 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹 — Emily Dickinson : : From ” Complete Poems ” By Emily Dickinson : Faber Edition : :🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹 🌹 🌹 🌹 🌹 અર્થ નિર્દેશ આસ્વાદ કાવ્યાર્થ વિચાર સંકલન : વિ જયરાજ : Dickinson’s classic poems are : : : : : : : : : : ‘I died for Beauty, but was scarce‘, ‘One need not be a Chamber to be Haunted‘, ‘I heard a Fly buzz – when I died’, and ‘I cannot live with You‘. ‘A Light Exists in Spring’ is not Emily Dickinson’s best-known poem, but it is a fine poem about the spring season . Written in around 1864 but not published until 1896 (as with many of Dickinson’s poems), ‘A Light Exists in Spring’ beautifully captures the way that spring slowly appears in our consciousness, like a light in the distance. Also seems to acknowledge what we now call ‘SAD’ or Seasonal Affective Disorder, with the passing of Spring affecting our contentedness. A distinctive colour and lights on the horizon, on the distant hills, which can’t have its magic as humans, feel. This light lingering reveals to us trees that are far away on distant slopes; the light of the SPRING will speak to Humans and silently passes away keeping the shadows in our mind. And we are taken aback behind. The gradual loss of the light with onset of new season , say of Rain , affects the level of contentedness we feel, much as trade or business, if it intruded on the religious sacrament, would rob it of some of its divinity.’ In ‘A Light Exists in Spring’ we have a ‘nature poem’ but also a ‘religious poem’, thanks to that final stanza. But what are we to make of Dickinson’s reference to science in the poem’s second stanza?

“A Color stands abroad
On Solitary Fields
That Science cannot overtake
But Human Nature feels.”. : : : : : : : : : : Science cannot supersede or outstrip the beauty of the spring sunlight: although Dickinson doesn’t go as far as Keats in his Romantic distaste for science’s desire to ‘unweave a rainbow’ (a poetry/science opposition that Richard Dawkins sought to challenge in his book, Unweaving the Rainbow), this stanza acknowledges that the human heart is alive to things which science can merely understand – not that understanding and analysing the natural world is not important, but that human interaction with the world is far more complex and ineffable than scientific analysis of nature. Note how ‘Human Nature’ draws a Blakean link between mankind and the natural world: our human nature is what comprehends nature. Is this an encroachment ?

” A Color stands abroad
On Solitary Fields
That Science cannot overtake
But Human Nature feels.” : : : : વિજ્ઞાન વસંતના અજવાળાની સુંદરતાને વટાવી શકતું નથી અથવા તેનાથી આગળ વધી શકતું નથી: જો કે ડિકિન્સન વિજ્ઞાનની ‘unweave a Rainbow’ 🌈 ની ખ્વાહિશ માટે તેની રોમેન્ટિક અરુચિમાં કીટ્સ Keats ની જેમ આગળ વધતી નથી. રેઈન્બો’ (એક કવિતા/વિજ્ઞાનનો વિરોધ જેને રિચાર્ડ ડોકિન્સે Richard Dawkins તેમના પુસ્તક, ‘Unweaving The Rainbow’ માં પડકારવાનો પ્રયાસ કર્યો હતો), આ પંક્તિ સ્વીકારે છે કે માનવ હૃદય એવું સંજીવન અને જીવંત છે જેને વિજ્ઞાન માત્ર સમજી શકે છે – એવું નથી કે નૈસર્ગિક વિશ્વને સમજીને તેનું વિશ્લેષણ કરીએ ; એ નથી. તે પ્રકૃતિના વૈજ્ઞાનિક પૃથ્થકરણ Nature’s Scientific Laws કરતાં વિશ્વ સાથેની મનુષ્ય ની ક્રિયા પ્રતિક્રિયા વધું જટિલ અને ઈનેફબલ ineffable/ અવાચ્ય / અનિર્વચનીય છે. એટલે જ તો મેઘધનુષી કાવ્ય રચના સર્જકો અને ભાવકો ને મનપસંદ છે : ગીત,ગઝલ, કાવ્યો માં : Human Nature’ draws a Blakean link between mankind and the natural world: Our human nature always comprehends nature. (The fact that ‘feels’ is an almost replication of ‘ Fields’ consolidates this close bond between Nature and the Humans.) : : : : ડિકિન્સનની આ કવિતા સાથે, વસંતના ઝડપથી ચાલ્યા જનારા સૌંદર્યની ઉદાસીનતા / melancholy ના ભાવો વહી જાય છે : : :: Let us believe that Beauty is intransient : ::Emily Dickinson, ‘A Light Exists in Spring‘. : : Poem Analysis Presented by V Jayaraj Pune India : : : : અર્થ નિર્દેશ આસ્વાદ કાવ્યાર્થ વિચાર સંકલન વિ જયરાજ : : પૂણે ઈન્ડિયા : : : : મે ૨ , ૨૦૨૨ : : જેઠ સુદ બીજ : : : : : : : :

Now fades the last long streak of snow’: Alfred, Lord Tennyson : : Spring Time Classic : :

Now fades the last long streak of snow,
Now burgeons every maze of quick
About the flowering squares, and thick
By ashen roots the violets blow. (1)

Now rings the woodland loud and long,
The distance takes a lovelier hue,
And drown’d in yonder living blue
The lark becomes a sightless song. (2) Now dance the lights on lawn and lea,
The flocks are whiter down the vale,
And milkier every milky sail
On winding stream or distant sea;. (3). Where now the seamew pipes, or dives
In yonder greening gleam, and fly
The happy birds, that change their sky
To build and brood; that live their lives
(4)
From land to land; and in my breast
Spring wakens too; and my regret
Becomes an April violet,
And buds and blossoms like the rest. (5). –Alfred, Lord Tennyson : : : : : : : : : : : : : 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹. In Memorium A. H. H. (1850) માં લખાયેલી long elegy – તેના મિત્ર Arthur Henry Hallam ( મૃત્યુ ૧૮૩૩ માં ૨૨ વર્ષ ની ઉંમરે ) ની યાદમાં : અત્યંત લાગણીવશ ઉદાસીનતા દાખવવામાં લખાયેલ – વસંત ના આગમન પર એક bittersweet take ની પ્રસ્તુતિ છે . This is a poem of triumph of love , faith and God over death and doubt. Nature’s bliss is felt all over. (૧). Spring brings happiness to birds and beasts as they enjoy newness all over. They chirp and sing to express their delight. The woodland rings with music. Even though the lark can not be seen , its presence can be felt in the melodies that it has poured. ( Shakespeare’s Sonnet 29, “the lark at break of day arising / From sullen earth, sings hymns at heaven’s gate” (11–12). ) . Tennyson ‘s Singing ” lark becomes a sightless song.” The snow covered land was dark and gloomy. As the snow melts , the land and valley glisten with light. Spring gives movement to the sea and river. The boats and ships are sailing in the sea and river. They look milkier because of the brightness of sunlight. The entire woodland seems to enjoy the Spring Season. The pleasant environment gleams in green and makes the birds fly and dance in merriment. They move to find comfortable place to give birth to the young ones. The sea mews sing and dive in pleasure over the sea. Its a New Life. Mark of happiness , joy and delight. The blooming flowers and the sprouting plant life along with the singing birds give life and movement to the woodland. A Gift Of Nature. Symbol Of Rejuvenation. Spring has not only awakened the earth but has also filled Poet with the Hope who recovers from his regrets and ” becomes an April Violet .” The Violet Flower is a Symbol Of Life and Freshness : Both for the earth and the poet. Following line evinces this thought : “From land to land; and in my breast,
Spring wakens too; and my regret
Becomes an April violet,
And buds and blossoms like the rest. ” : : : : Thus , Charms of season has been narrated beautifully in this poem. The word ” Snow ” symbolises the winter season and is an indication of regrets in the mood of the poet. The colour green , white and violet bear the Significance Of Life On The Earth. Words like burgeones , Violet , Birds are the Images reflective of Mood . Subject of the poem is ” Change from the mood of regrets .”Theme is ” Hope and Belief in Life. દરિયાઈ સિ- મેવ્સ પક્ષીઓ પાવો વગાડતા ( Sea- Gull’s laughing cry in fact on flying / readyness for leaving by their grown up large chicks ) તેના જળમાં આનંદપૂર્વક ડૂબકી મારે છે.

Spring

Sound the flute!
Now it’s mute!
Bird’s delight,
Day and night,
Nightingale,
In the dale,
Lark in sky,—
Merrily,
Merrily merrily, to welcome in the year. Little boy,
Full of joy;
Little girl,
Sweet and small;
Cock does crow,
So do you;
Merry voice,
Infant noise;
Merrily, merrily, to welcome in the year. Little lamb,
Here I am;
Come and lick
My white neck;
Let me pull
Your soft wool;

Sing, cuccu, nu. Sing, cuccu.
Sing, cuccu. Sing, cuccu, nu.

Sumer is i-cumen in –
Lhude sing, cuccu!
Groweth sed and bloweth med
And springth the wude nu.
Sing, cuccu!

Awe bleteth after lomb,
Lhouth after calve cu,
Bulluc sterteth, bucke verteth –
Murie sing, cuccu!
Cuccu, cuccu.
Wel singes thu, cuccu.
Ne swik thu naver nu! “icumen” means it has come, as the presence of the cuckoo implies, and it’s here, nu (now). Summer, that is. If this thought is nu to you, if your bank holiday skies are grey, and cold raindrops falling down your neck, you might not be in the mood for such a loud, sweet, jolly Poem of the Week. On the other hand, The Cuckoo Song could cheer you up. Especially if you can find a group of people to sing it with you – in a gorgeous West Country accent.Awes, lombs, bullucs and cus are likewise stranger beasts that ewes, lambs, bullocks and cows. A lomb has got to be fatter than a lamb. So it beautifully suits those delinquent teenage lambs of early summer. If “sed” seems a bit colourless compared to “seed”, “med” makes “mead” seem stilted. It sounds like a friendly nickname for meadow. Perhaps it even reminds you of the Med.: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : ” Bulluc sterteth, bucke verteth –
Murie sing, cuccu!” What does this line convey from its 13 th Century writings?buckish elevation and perhaps conveys some sound , an animal makes.Is ‘sterteth’ , ‘starts?’A bullock, surprised by joy, or its prospect, has started from his grassy drowse. A “cu” chews the cud nearby. What more needs to be said? Well, it’s worth noticing that the Latin word “stertere” means “to snore”. Etymologically, “snore” is kin to “snort”. It’s only guesswork on my part, but I feel this bullock, too, could be voicing his territorial rights – like the buck, but from the other end. He’s snorting. Intransitively, of course.The last line is interesting. Russians say that the number of times you hear the cuckoo’s call represents the number of years you have left to live. By asking the cuckoo never to stop, the singer may just be wishing that summer could be neverending. But it’s plausible that there was once a similar, English superstition about the cuckoo, an interpretation that would heighten the final plea (“Don’t ever stop, now”) and give it added bittersweet flavour. Life, don’t ever stop.

The version of the text I’ve chosen is fussily punctuated but at least the spelling is not sanitised. Another point in its favour is that it begins with the “ground” – the repeated two lines that, in performance, are sung by the lower voices. This device, which printed versions don’t always make apparent, enriches the song’s lovely polyphonic texture, and, reproduced, brings the reader closer to imagining the lines as a round. The change of rhythm between the opening couplet and the first stanza adds to the contrast and vitality. And the paired lines look attractive on the page because of the chiasmus, more easily seen than heard: it adds a playful touch.

Have a murie bank holiday. You might hear a cuccu, if you’re luccy. And if the weather’s really awful, sing along with Ezra Pound instead.: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : ( Carol Rumens’s poem of the week
